After a one year hiatus the Metrobank Badminton Club is back with a vengeance by hosting its first internal tournament for officers and employees for the year. The event was dubbed “1st Metrobank Internal Badminton Tournament for 2010”. This was held at the Powersmash Badminton Court in Pasong Tamo Makati City.
The Opening ceremonies started with an opening prayer led by none other than our EVP and Club Adviser Boss Bernard Lapuz, which was followed by opening remarks by our incumbent Club President Mr. Randell Relova. Teams were divided into five teams defined by five different colors: Red, Blue, Yellow, Green & Orange. Teams were sworn in led by Team Blue’s Captain and perennial External Badminton player Janice Reyes (Systems).
Players were leveled into their respective classes for a fair and even playing field. Players came from the different Metrobank Departments, Divisions and its affiliates such as Philippine AXA and MTI. No less than Metrobank President and CEO Arthur Ty and his son AJ were among the players participating in the games.

Players were treated to an exhibition game between our President Arthur Ty and Metrobank Badminton Star Player Mark Manlapaz (Systems) against EVP and Club adviser Bernard Lapuz and newbie CEU varsity player Kristoff dela Cruz (Taft).
This was a baptism of fire of sorts for Kristoff who showed great form and determination in the leveling conducted by the club three weeks prior to the tournament.
Players cheered and were in awe at how our President could hold his own against Metrobank’s Best players. In the end the team of Sir Arthur & Mark prevailed against a good and competitive showing by Boss B. and the newbie.
Although dubbed as a “fun” game players made matches very competitive at the same time exciting. Every drive, drop and smash was a point on their way to victory!
Every point was hotly contested each player scrambled to make the shot count as they gave it their all in winning their respective matches. Strategy was key to victory as players match-ups were crucial in determining the victor.
The original Metrobank Badminton Club was formed in 2004 with Metrobank winning the over-all crown in the inter-bank tournament organized by the Rizal Badminton Club held on June 12 & 13, 2004 at the Badminton Central.
The team was composed of Bernard Lapuz, Anthony Fajardo, Brandy Ramos, Jerry Evariso, Jimmy Gertes, Caloy Lapid, Lyn Diaz, Janice Reyes, Ruby Gloria, Vivian Intal, Bong Arellano, Kristine Tolisora-Maligalig and Liza Alamar.
Metrobank breezed through the elimination rounds scoring wins over Chinabank, Equitable PCI Bank and Banco de Oro. Metrobank finished with the best score of 41 of a possible 45 among the top four winners in the four groups dropping only two games.
Metrobank went up against a formidable host RCBC in the semi-finals, while Equitable PCI went head to head with ADB in the other semi-final game.
In the FINALS Metrobank held off a stubborn Equitable PCI team en route to its first External Championship.
Metrobank’s undefeated mixed doubles pair of Bernard Lapuz and LynDiaz dominated all of its competitors while Metrobank ladies team pulled through with their respective victories.

Aside from the games players were also treated to raffle prizes courtesy of Mrs. Catherine Relova (Congressional Branch) prizes consists trinkets to Starbucks gift checks! Players were even treated to lunch courtesy of Mam Vivian Intal (Muntinlupa) and Mam Chi Dimaguila (New Manila).
In the end Team Blue won the overall crown by dominating Group A and Group B. The winning team was presented with an overall prize and Champion BagTags given to each individual player. At the end of the day the true winners of the game was each individual who gave their time to participate and play in this fun filled day. There were a lot of surprises and a lot of unexpected glitches but over-all this tournament was a resounding success!
The true nature of this game is not about beating your opponent. Its about playing a fun game with friends catching up on old acquaintances and getting to know new friends along the way. Somehow within 6 hours of playing with one another both officers and staff put aside their ranks and played a game we all have come to love. This surely won’t be the last! We hope that this be the start of a long and lasting friendship in a game everyone considers to be more than just a game but a passion and a way of living!
GO TEAM METROBANK!!!
